Parliament and Government of the UK
The UK parliament is responsible for national policy. Devolved assemblies have certain powers in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Political parties
Most members of the UK parliament are from the main 3 political parties. Nationalist parties are strongly represented in the assemblies.
The Royal Family
Britain has a constitutional monarchy. This means that although head of state, the King or Queen, has limits their powers.
Trooping the Colour
The Queen's official birthday is marked each year by a colourful military parade and march-past known as Trooping the Colour
Law and order
There is no single legal system in the UK. England and Wales operate the same system, while Scotland and Northern Ireland each has its own.
Charities and voluntary groups
1000s of not-for-profit organisations provide services in the UK and overseas supporting social, economic and cultural causes.
Europe
The UK is 1 of Europe’s 48 countries and a member of the European Union - a partnership of nations working to benefit their citizens.
