Our Ambassador

On 5 November 2008 Michael Tatham, Her Majesty's Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina, presented credentials to Chairman of the BiH Presidency dr Haris Silajdzic.

Michael Tatham was born in 1965 in Italy.  His father was also a diplomat and he spent much of his childhood outside the United Kingdom, living in Italy, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Oman.

After school, Michael Tatham studied Modern History at Oxford University.  He joined the Foreign Office in 1987 and has worked overseas in Prague (twice) and Sofia.  He has also spent much time working in London, including a spell as a Private Secretary to Prime Minister Tony Blair between 1999-2002.  The most memorable parts of his diplomatic career have been watching the momentous changes in Czechoslovakia following the velvet revolution in 1989 and working on the Northern Ireland Peace Process between 1999-2002. Between 2006-2008, Michael Tatham headed the Department in the Foreign Office dealing with the Western Balkans, an experience which provided valuable background to his current posting in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Michael Tatham is married and has a young daughter, born in 2004.  His wife, Belinda Cherrington, is a freelance television producer.  He took a career break in 2005-2006 to help bring up his daughter.  His hobbies include mountain walking (he has travelled in Alaska, Patagonia and Central Asia) and cookery (he has won several prizes and in 2004 was a guest in a Czech TV cookery programme).  He runs regularly and has completed half-marathons.  He plays squash and supports Tottenham Hotspurs Football Club.  He relaxes by listening to the music of Bob Dylan.
