History of DFID engagement in BIH
DFID has been active in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) since 1992 and in addition to our multilateral contributions, we have provided bilateral aid totalling about 80 million for the period 1992-2008.
For most of the 1992-1999 period we provided emergency and humanitarian relief in response to the impact of the war, both bilaterally and through the international relief agencies. We have also supported the power sector reconstruction programmes through the World Bank Power II programme.
No separate overall evaluation of the impact of UK emergency and humanitarian assistance was undertaken, while it is too early to evaluate the impact of more recent reform and institutional strengthening efforts.
DFID prioritised reforms in two key documents that governed our engagement in BiH since the 2000: the Country Strategy Paper (CSP: 2000-2003) (pdf, 236 KB) and the Regional Assistance Plan (RAP: 2003-2007) (pdf, 3.76 MB).
With the Regional Assistance Plan, DFID’s strategic approach to the Western Balkans moved on significantly from the approaches adopted by the early DFID interventions. DFID placed a high priority on enhancing the effectiveness of the international community’s assistance efforts.
